What is the difference between coaching, mentoring and CONSULTING?

Coaching, mentoring and consulting are different ways of supporting people, teams and organisations.

Coaching puts you at the centre of the process. Rather than telling you what to do, coaching uses purposeful questions and reflection to help you explore your strengths, goals, challenges and possibilities and identify your own way forward.

Mentoring draws more directly on the mentor's knowledge and experience. A mentor may share insights, guidance and lessons learned in an area where they have relevant experience.

Consulting brings specific knowledge and expertise to a situation. A consultant may provide advice, analyse challenges, develop solutions or support implementation and improvement.

Our support does not have to fit into one box. Where appropriate, approaches can be combined to suit your needs.

How do I know which service or approach is right for me, and is coaching suitable if I do not have a specific goal?

You don't need to work this out before contacting us or have a fully defined goal. We can discuss what you are looking for and identify the service or combination of approaches that best fits your needs.

You might bring a goal, challenge, decision, transition or idea, or simply know that you want something to change. Coaching can also support growth and development when things are going well.

If your needs fall outside our professional scope, we will be transparent about this and discuss other options where appropriate.

What happens in a coaching session, and will you tell me what to do?

Each session is shaped around you and what you would like to work on. This might include your strengths, experiences, wellbeing, relationships, goals, challenges, possibilities and practical next steps.

In coaching, you remain at the centre of decisions and actions. Your coach uses questions, reflection and purposeful conversation to help you explore possibilities, build understanding and identify your own way forward rather than telling you what to do.

Where useful, your coach may offer activities or tools from the People • Purpose • Potential Framework™. Tools are offered with your agreement rather than following a prescribed pathway.

What is the People • Purpose • Potential Framework™?

The People • Purpose • Potential Framework™ is our practical framework for supporting reflection, growth and meaningful action.

People — understanding the person, including strengths, identity, experiences, relationships, wellbeing and circumstances.

Purpose — exploring what matters, what someone would like to strengthen or change and where they want to go.

Potential — recognising capability and possibilities and turning insight into practical action and continued growth.

The framework provides structure while recognising that every person and situation is different.

How many coaching sessions will I need?

There is no set number. Some people benefit from a focused session around a particular goal or decision, while others choose ongoing coaching to allow time for reflection, action and development.

Individual sessions and 6- and 12-session coaching packages are available.

Our aim is to strengthen your confidence, insight and capability so that the benefits of coaching continue beyond our work together.

How will we know if coaching is working?

We begin by exploring what you would like to achieve and what meaningful progress would look like for you.

Outcomes might include greater confidence, clearer decision-making, progress towards a goal, changed behaviour, stronger relationships, improved wellbeing, increased leadership capability or feeling better equipped to navigate future situations.

We reflect on progress throughout coaching and adjust the focus where needed.

Do you work with children, young people and families?

Yes. Our Children, Young People & Family Coaching provides strengths-based, practical support around behaviour, wellbeing, confidence and life's transitions.

Support considers the child or young person's age, development, strengths, communication and circumstances, as well as the important influence of family, relationships, culture and environment.

Depending on what is needed, support may involve the child or young person, parents or carers, or a combination of both.

Children and young people are treated as active participants, with their voice, rights, dignity, safety and participation respected. Appropriate consent and safeguarding arrangements apply, and wherever appropriate children and young people are supported to understand and participate in decisions about their coaching.

Do you work with people with disabilities or additional support needs?

Yes. We aim to provide inclusive and accessible services that recognise individual strengths, communication, preferences and support needs.

Reasonable adjustments can be discussed to support meaningful participation, choice and self-determination.

Is coaching the same as counselling, psychology or therapy?

No. Coaching is not psychological treatment, diagnosis, counselling or therapy. It focuses on strengths, development, reflection, goals and practical action.

Our work is trauma-aware and healing-informed, but we do not provide clinical trauma treatment.

Is coaching confidential?

Yes. Coaching conversations and personal information are treated confidentially in accordance with our privacy, consent and record-keeping requirements.

Confidentiality may be limited by legal, professional or safeguarding responsibilities, including circumstances involving serious concerns about safety or wellbeing. These boundaries are explained as part of the consent process.

How do you approach safeguarding and professional practice?

Woods Coaching and Development is committed to safe, ethical and professional practice.

Services are delivered with appropriate safeguarding, professional boundaries, informed consent, record keeping and risk management.

Relevant screening and child-safety requirements apply when working with children and young people. All services are delivered within professional qualifications, competence and scope.

Can organisations combine coaching with training, consulting or program development?

Yes. Organisational and community support can combine coaching, training, consulting, facilitation and program development rather than requiring your needs to fit a predetermined service.

We work with you to understand the people, purpose, context and outcomes, then develop an approach that fits.

This allows different forms of support to work together to build capability, strengthen practice and support sustainable outcomes.

Do you work in remote and regional communities?

Yes. Woods Coaching and Development is based in Kununurra, Western Australia, and brings significant experience working alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities and across remote and regional settings.

Our approach recognises the importance of culture, Country, family, kinship, community, identity, strengths and collective wellbeing. We listen before acting, respect local knowledge and protocols, work alongside appropriate local people and organisations, and support participation and self-determination.

We also recognise that approaches developed for metropolitan settings do not always translate directly to remote and regional communities. Our work is flexible and responsive to local relationships, culture, community strengths, workforce realities and access to services.

We do not position ourselves as speaking for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people or communities; our role is to listen, work alongside and respond to local context, priorities and strengths.

Are services available online and in person, and do you travel?

Yes. Services are available online across Australia and in person, depending on location, individual or organisational needs, and the type of support required.

We also travel for coaching, training, facilitation and organisational or community work, including to remote and regional locations.

Where travel is required, any applicable transport, accommodation, meals and reasonable related costs are discussed in advance and clearly identified in the quote.

How much do services cost, and do you provide Community Access Coaching?

Our standard coaching rates and package options are published on the Fees page, so you can see costs upfront.

Training, workshops, program development and other tailored organisational or community services are quoted based on the scope and requirements of the work. Where travel is required, applicable travel and related costs are discussed in advance and included in the quote.

We also offer Community Access Coaching as part of our commitment to making coaching more accessible. A limited number of coaching opportunities are provided at no cost for people who may otherwise be unable to access professional coaching due to financial barriers.

Community Access Coaching is available by application or referral, with places dependent on capacity, suitability and the nature of the support required.
